Welcome to the latest training update from PTRC outlining information on our upcoming highways, traffic and transport planning courses, seminars and conferences

As many of our projects and events are aimed at promoting more sustainable forms of transport, we have decided, where possible, to reduce our use of paper and its subsequent transport and increase our electronic information of forthcoming activities and events. We are however conscious that we all suffer from considerable amounts of mail in our mailboxes and our intention is to send these bulletins only on a monthly basis.

Two-Day Course - Introduction to Highway Design, Maintenance and Engineering

29 and 30 January 2008, MWB Business Exchange, Birmingham

The recent increase in funding for transport schemes has led to a greater need for practitioners from varied backgrounds to gain an appreciation and understanding of highway design and implementation. The principles of highway engineering apply not only to the construction of major new road schemes but also to smaller improvements such as carriageway widening, traffic calming, traffic management, cycle ways, residential road design and construction and maintenance schemes.
This two-day course will consider the roles and responsibilities of highway authorities and guide participants through the highways design, implementation and maintenance processes of new or remodelled roads.

Masterclass: Personal Travel Planning - Making it Work,

London Borough of Sutton - 29th November 2007

Personal Travel Planning (PTP) is an approach to delivering targeted information directly to travelers, to help them make sustainable travel choices. It seeks to overcome habitual use of the car, enabling more journeys to be made on foot, bike, bus, train or in shared cars. It can also seek to discourage unnecessary travel, through the provision of local or site-specific information.
We have invited the author of the "Personal Travel Planning - Making it Work" report, and key organisations involved in the delivery of current PTP projects to come and discuss their findings in this Masterclass. Our aim is to disseminate best practice and provide a forum for practitioners to discuss how to apply the principles to their own circumstances.

ACT Masterclass: Residential Travel Plans - Bringing Travel Planning Home.

Bristol - 6th December 2007

The ACT RTP Masterclasses in Poole, Leeds and Kent effectively disseminated the best practice guide launched in 2005, and have been highly praised by attending delegates. This new masterclass builds on this success with a revised programme covering latest issues and more detail on RTP elements.

The first session deals with the concept of RTPs for New Communities, where we have invited speakers from DCLG to talk about the importance of transport in new developments with reference to the Eco-Towns project and a speaker to talk about a local Eco-Village.

The second session is about the best practice guidance and we have a presentation form Lynda Addison one of the authors of the DfT guidance, and Rose McArthur to contrast with the new guidance from Transport for London closing with a new best practice case study not contained in guidance.

The afternoon sessions will focus on the detail of some of the complementary infrastructure and smarter choices measures.

The very popular and reasonably priced Evening Lecture Series in Traffic and Transport starts again in Nottingham and Cardiff in January, as well as a third London venue in Hammersmith. The Series is aimed at recent recruits to the highways, traffic and transport professions, as well as those more mature practitioners who are engaged in "niche" sectors of the profession and would appreciate a broader view of the processes involved in policy, planning, design and implementation of transport schemes.
